St. Alphonsus Liguori Inspiration and Gift Kit

Patron of Arthritis and Confession

Born near Naples, Italy of a noble family, Alphonsus Liguori was the oldest of seven children raised in a pious home. A child prodigy, Alphonsus was extremely well educated and earned his doctorate in law from the University of Naples at the age of 16. Establishing his own practice by the age of 21, Alphonsus was a higly successful attorney and did not lose a single case in 8 years. As he matured he grew increasingly disheartened with the secular world and in time he felt a calling to religious life.

He declined an arranged marriage, studied theology, and was ordained a priest at age 30. During his ministry he was noted for his simple, clear, direct style of preaching and his gentle and understanding way in the confessional.

Ever the scholar, Alphonsus wrote over 111 volumes on theology. In 1749, Pope Benedict XIV approved of Alphosus founding of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (often referred to as the Liguorian or the Redemptorists.

His accomplishments are all the more inspiring in that they were achieved in spite of the most constant obstacle of ill health. Throughout his life he was afflicted with severe rheumatism and he often could barely move nor raise his chin from his chest. St. Alphonsus was canonized in 1839 and was declared a Docter of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. He is the patron of Confessors, theologians, and vocations.
